Higher elevation, smaller waistline?

February 4, 2010

Wired Science had an interesting piece today which discussed the possibility of losing weight after spending some time at a higher elevation. Before you get too excited at the idea (and really, who wouldn’t be intrigued), read the article thoroughly. It’s not as simple as it first sounds.

But what if it was? What if it was possible to take a month off from work, head to the Alps or wherever and return home a size or two trimmer? I’ll be honest – I would think about it. Really, it would be an ideal vacation. Head to somewhere beautiful, take in the sights and return healthier than when you left. Sounds pretty stellar, actually.

Thinking about this delusion brings to mind the old saying, “If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.” Maybe I will stick to my attempts at getting off my lazy rear and attempting exercise (and so far, they remain only “attempts”). At least that has proven science to back it up.

Would you sign up for the slimming mountain trip? Or do you prefer good, old-fashioned diet and exercise?

  1. I’ll take diet and exercise for 200, Alex. I’ll save the vacation days for somewhere beachy, plus, D&E is much closer to a repeatable routine than trekking through mountains!
